Winter Wonders
As the wind swirls through fallen leaves, we're
reminded that another
New England
winter is on the way. But one of the wonders of winter is that Bread of
Life will be there to help people through.
For families and seniors living on a fixed income,
struggling with unemployment, low-paying jobs or illness, winter can be
especially tough. Fuel costs are up significantly over last year and the
holidays are fast approaching.
In the midst of this, BOL volunteers and partner
organizations are swinging into action. During November, BOL will
distribute over 400 turkeys, hams or supermarket gift certificates to
our food pantry recipients-- providing a holiday feast for about 1,200
parents and children.
We'll also cosponsor the annual "Don't Be
Alone On Thanksgiving"
Turkey
Dinner on
Thanksgiving
Day
Centre
United
Methodist
Church
in
Malden
from noon 2 pm. We will serve a complete sit-down meal to about 200
seniors and people who are alone, with delivery of
meal to about 250 additional seniors who can't get
out.
This special meal is sponsored by Anthony's

. Fran Brown coordinating this huge effort involving dozens
volunteers who deliver meals, cook turkeys, prepare vegetables, bake
pies, serve and clean up. People interested in volunteering or donating
can call Fran at 781-321-2034.
For Christmas, BOL will work with volunteers from Temple Tifereth Israel of
Malden to
provide our annual Christmas Day Dinner at St. Paul's Parish, Malden,
from noon - 2pm. Ed Weiner, who will be head chef, and Lauren
Cherkas, the Temple’s Social
Action Chairperson, will
coordinate the banquet of roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy,
vegetables, fresh fruit and desserts. Donations from the community help
provide a gift of socks, gloves, scarves or underwear for each person
attending -- including the elderly, homeless, and those who are alone.
We're also working in conjunction with Jenniferat the Malden
Mayor's Office and Elizabeth
Engerman at Tri-City
Community Action Program to
make sure needy children receive a gift on Christmas day. Volunteers are
encouraged to donate gift cards to Toys 'R' Us or other department
stores, so parents can buy the right gift for their child.

Annual BOL
Golf
Classic
The
Bread of Life hosted a golf tournament
at
the Andover Country Club on
October
18th. It was a beautiful Fall
day,
temperature just right and plenty
foliage
for those that golfed and also
those
that volunteered their time to
enjoy.

Bread of Life
Stands in the
Gap
"Joe"
and his wife and child
were homeless and sheltered
for months in
the Day’s Inn in Saugus. We met them when
our Homeless
Outreach team delivered weekly groceries
and meals to
them there. Now, he and his family have an
apartment of
their own. "I don’t know what we would have
done without you
guys!," he said, "You helped us out when
we didn’t have
anything."
"Ling"
comes to the evening meal
at St. Paul’s bringing
her little
three-year-old granddaughter and wheeling her
infant grandson
in his carriage. But Ling is too concerned
about others
getting enough food to take food herself --
even though her
family is clearly in need.
Gesturing toward
her granddaughter, she conveys in her
limited English
that she just wants a meal for the little girl.
One of the
volunteers tried in vain to let Ling know she
should eat, but
she selflessly refused. Finally, they
convinced her to
take some bread and fruit home for the
children.
"Teresa,"
who is 40 and has two
grown children and a
grandchild, went
through two major surgeries in the past six
months. The
recovery on the second one was longer than
expected and she
had to stay with a friend for a week.
Before she
returned home she called BOL, anxious because
she had no food
in her house. BOL was able to settle her
fears and
provide her with the groceries she desperately
needed.

Highlights
Two of Bread of
Life’s stalwart partner groups --
St. James in
Medford and St.
Peter’s in Malden --
have
been closed by
the Archdiocese. Yet amazingly, these
committed
volunteers are not going to let that stop them
from continuing
with Bread of Life!
"Their
loyalty to the work is extraordinary given
that their
churches have closed," said BOL
Director Tom
Feagley, "It
would have been so easy to say ‘we can’t do it
anymore.’"
The members of
St. James have been providing
meals at BOL
since 1987. Longtime coordinator Rita
Menezes ,
helper Marie Barry, and
the rest of the team are
not giving up
the service they have grown to love. When
their church was
slated to close, they decided to carry over
the funds set
aside for the ministry, which is enough to keep
their BOL meal
going for at least a year. They now call
their group
"St. James Outreach." Says Rita, "This gives us
a chance to see
each other every month and stay in touch
even though we
don’t have the same church."
Ann & Frank
Magistro of St. Peter’s
have also
been serving
since 1987, and are determined to keep doing
the second
Wednesday BOL meal. They already have some
helping hands
from the teens of Malden Catholic and the
Malden High
School Key Club -- but they very much need
a partner church
or temple to help them meet the financial
end of putting
on a meal - which usually runs $100 per
month. If any
group is interested in partnering with St.
Peter’s,
please contact Tom Feagley at 781-397-0404.

Malden resident,
Joan Lukas, runs in the Walk for Bread & 10K run,
raising the
highest amount of pledges.
2004 Walk for
Bread
& 10K Run
Friends of Bread
of Life, members of the Key Club
Malden High
School, runners who had heard of us
through web
sites and folks drawn to us via leafleting and
media met on
October 3 to make the 12th Walk for Bread
success.
Individual pledges totaled nearly $8,000 and added
corporate
pledges of $10,000 enabled the Walk to near
2004 goal of
$20,000. Help us get over the top -- you can
still donate to
the Walk at: www.active.com/
donate/walkforbread.
High pledge raisers were Joan
Lukas
960 ($400 Walk
day, $560 active.com) and Rachel
&
Kelly Dunn $653
($653 Walk day). The first male runner
over the finish
line was Sam Tat,
and the first female
runner was Leslie
Phillips.
By working with
a great Walk Committee, I felt
more connected
to the Mission of the Bread of Life to serve
the needy of
this area. Anne
Siegler's, Barbara Ball's,
Gabriella
Snyder's, Tom Feagley's and
many other's
contributions to
the Walk made the Walk Committee's
easier. I hope
to do more with the Walk Committee to make
the 13th Walk
for Bread better than ever.
